The latest time to drink 30 popular drinks before bed

A grande Starbucks Pike Place Roast has to be finished by about 8:58 AM to leave no more than 50 mg of caffeine at an 11 PM bedtime; a Red Bull by about 6:52 PM. Pick your bedtime and metabolism to see every drink, with a stricter and a more lenient reading of the sleep research side by side.

Methodology

How the times are calculated

Each time comes from the same model as our cutoff calculator: caffeine takes about 45 minutes to reach its peak, then halves every 3 hours (fast metabolism), 5 hours (average) or 8 hours (slow). The latest time is the moment after which more than the threshold amount would still be in your body at bedtime. Drinks that start below the threshold get no cutoff, but caffeine from several drinks adds up.

Where the thresholds come from

A 2023 meta-analysis (Gardiner et al.) gave two dose-specific cutoffs: a cup of coffee (107 mg) at least 8.8 hours before bed and a pre-workout serving (217.5 mg) at least 13.2 hours before. Run through the model, both leave almost the same amount at bedtime with an average half-life:

Caffeine left at bedtime under the Gardiner 2023 cutoffs
DoseCutoffLeft at bedtime, t½ 3 ht½ 5 ht½ 8 h
Coffee, 107 mg8.8 h14 mg32 mg50 mg
Pre-workout, 217.5 mg13.2 h10 mg35 mg69 mg

So the 2023 cutoffs imply roughly 33 mg at bedtime. A 2025 randomized trial by the same group (Gardiner et al., 23 healthy young men) found that 100 mg had no significant effect on sleep even when taken 4 hours before bed, which leaves about 57 mg at bedtime. That is the lenient column.

The conservative column uses 50 mg, the bedtime target of every calculator on this site, so the table and the calculators always agree. It is our modelling choice, not a published threshold, and it sits between the two studies. If you follow the stricter 2023 reading (about 33 mg), finish each drink about 3 hours earlier than the conservative time at average metabolism.

The label is not the dose

Researchers at the University of Florida bought the same 16 oz Starbucks Breakfast Blend from one store on six consecutive days and measured between 259 and 564 mg of caffeine per cup; the decaf coffees they tested all had less than 18 mg (McCusker, Goldberger & Cone 2003). Starbucks itself lists brewed coffee as a range (315–390 mg for a grande). Where a brand gives a range, the table uses its lower figure and shows the range; the higher figure would move the time earlier.

Where the caffeine figures come from

Each figure was read on the brand's own nutrition or product page or, for generic coffee and tea, in USDA FoodData Central, and every row links to its source with the date it was checked. We do not copy figures from third-party caffeine databases. Brands reformulate, so a figure can change after the date shown in its row. Limits of this analysis

  • Three half-lives stand in for a much wider real range: about 1.5 to 9.5 hours in healthy adults (Institute of Medicine 2001). Hormonal contraception and pregnancy slow caffeine clearance; smoking speeds it up.
  • The 2025 trial tested 23 healthy young men, and the 2023 cutoffs are averages across studies. Neither may hold for you.
  • Each time is for one drink on its own. Caffeine from earlier drinks is still in your body and adds up.
  • Caffeine content varies from cup to cup, especially for coffee-shop drinks (see above).
  • This is an educational estimate, not medical advice.

Questions

What is the latest time to drink a Starbucks grande coffee before bed?

For an 11 PM bedtime and average caffeine metabolism, this model puts the latest time for a grande Pike Place Roast (315 mg by Starbucks' figure) at 8:58 AM on the conservative estimate and 9:55 AM on the lenient one. Starbucks lists up to 390 mg for this size, which would push both times earlier.

How late can I drink a Red Bull and still sleep?

An 8.4 fl oz Red Bull has 80 mg. With an 11 PM bedtime and average metabolism the conservative latest time is 6:52 PM and the lenient one 7:48 PM. With slow metabolism both move earlier; use the table's metabolism switch to see the range.

Does a can of Coke keep you awake at night?

A 12 oz Coca-Cola has 34 mg, which is already below both bedtime thresholds used here, so the model sets no cutoff for one can. Caffeine from several drinks adds up, and the stricter reading of the 2023 meta-analysis (about 33 mg at bedtime) is close to one can's full amount.

Why does the table show two different times?

Two studies by the same research group point to different amounts of caffeine that are acceptable at bedtime. A 2025 randomized trial found no significant sleep effect for 100 mg taken 4 hours before bed, which leaves about 57 mg at bedtime (lenient column). The conservative column uses the 50 mg target of this site's calculators. A 2023 meta-analysis implies a stricter 33 mg.

Why might my coffee have more caffeine than the table says?

The same drink varies. In a 2003 study, a 16 oz coffee bought from the same coffee shop on six consecutive days measured between 259 and 564 mg of caffeine (McCusker et al.). Treat every time here as an estimate and adjust it to how you actually sleep.
